A few miles down river from the Taos Box and its confluence with the Rio Pueblo de Taos, Rio Grande rafting outfitters provide a very popular half-day rafting trips on a more moderate section of the Lower Gorge. Commonly referred to as the Pilar, or Racecourse section, this trip has been the sight of the annual Rio Grande Whitewater Races on Mother's Day weekends for nearly three decades.
During the 5-mile (8 km) whitewater trip through the Rio Grande State Park, the canyon walls narrow to create fairly continuous Class II-III whitewater. The stretch includes the exciting Albert Falls, The Narrows, Big Rock, and Souse Hole Rapids.
Outfitters welcome families with children as young as six years old on both paddle- and oar-guided raft trips in the Lower Gorge.
