In 1968 a 48-mile (77-km)
section of the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico was among the first
rivers to be included in the National Wild and Scenic River system.
Near the quaint northern New Mexico town of Taos, much of this
protected Rio Grande affords a variety of popular whitewater
opportunities for seasoned as well as young and inexperienced
rafters.
During
normal spring and early summer water flows, the 17-mile (27 km) raft
trip through the remote and majestic 800-foot deep volcanic lower
Taos Box is New Mexico's wildest whitewater ride. Its many dynamic
Class III-IV+ rapids, which include Ski Jump, Powerline and Rock
Garden, provide a thrilling and wet day for adventurous rafters. In
addition to splendid whitewater, the Taos Box is also noted for its
natural hot springs and various birds, which include eagles, geese,
herons, and ducks.
