America's
Southwest States—Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas—are
world-famous for their unsurpassed canyonland beauty. Today
whitewater rafting provides access to these sandstone canyons,
granite and basalt gorges, and arid deserts that previously could
only be seen from overlooks and aircraft. The Southwest's menu of
guided rafting adventures includes half-day, one-day and
multiday raft trips suitable for the adventurous and the timid, the
old and the young, and the disabled.
Utah's
whitewater rafting trips are found on the middle Colorado and two of
its tributaries: the Green and San Juan. Green River rafting trips
through Dinosaur National Monument and Desolation Canyon traverse
some of the most rugged and unusual landscape in the United States.
The Desolation-Gray canyons trip is a classic multiday trip for
anyone wanting superb scenery and nonintimidating whitewater. The
final stretches of the San Juan River, in southeast Utah, contain
unusual and colorful geologic formations and fairly easy rapids.
Middle
Colorado River outfitters offer one- and two-day trips through the
big waters of the impressive Westwater Canyon, popular one-day
family trips in the Professor Valley-Fisher Towers canyons adjacent
to Arches National Park, and multiday excursions through spectacular
Canyonlands National Park.
Arizona's
Grand Canyon of the Colorado rafting adventure is one of the
grandest wilderness river experiences the world. Some of the
Canyon's outfitters report that their trips are sold out a year or
more in advance.
Some
of the Southwest's lesser known rafting trips are in the semiarid
and arid rivers of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Central Arizona's
Salt and Verde offer late-winter and early-spring trips that often
coincide with northward bird migrations.
New
Mexico's three whitewater opportunities are located in the Wild and
Scenic canyons near the charming old western town of Taos. One is a
multiday trip through the Rio Chama's red and yellow sandstone
canyons celebrated in the art of Georgia O'Keeffe. The second
provides one- or two-day trips on the dynamic Class III-IV rapids of
the Rio Grande's 800-foot deep Taos Box. The third is the popular
family Rio Grande trip on Pilar, or Racecourse, section.
In
Texas, year-round rafting on the Rio Grande, through the towering
canyons of Big Bend National Park, is possible for nearly 300 miles
(480 km) along the United States-Mexico border.
