The Chilliwack River,
British Columbia's southernmost commercial rafting trip is an
exciting springtime adventure. The scenic Chilliwack Valley is
easily accessible Washington State as well as metropolitan Vancouver
and southern British Columbia.
Chilliwack's
outfitters offer raft trips on the 12-mile (19 km) lower river from
Slesse Creek to Veddar Crossing. Most of the early raft trip, from
Slesse Creek to Rock Garden rapids, provides a relaxing warm-up for
the exciting Tamihi section, the highlight of the Chilliwack. Tamihi,
annual site of the Canadian junior kayak championships, is a 1-mile
section with almost continuous Class III-IV rapids. The Chilliwack's
rapids, exciting yet not too difficult, can be enjoyed by first-time
as well as experienced rafters.
The
Chilliwack flows from the North Cascades Mountains in Washington
State to its confluence with the Fraser River near the city of
Chilliwack, southeast of Vancouver. While Chilliwack rafting trips
can be run from April until July, the best whitewater levels and
weather are normally during May and June.
