The Kananaskis River, in western Alberta's renowned Kananaskis region, features a popular half-day whitewater trip for first-time rafters and families. Raft trips, which begin at Lusk Creek, 1.5-miles (2.5 km) downstream of Barrier Lake, provide a good introduction to Class I-III whitewater rapids.
A highlight of the trip is navigating through the site of the 1988 Canadian Kayak Championships. This 1.5-mile (2.5-km) stretch of intense whitewater through a narrow canyon was redesigned in the early 1980's to accommodate the kayaking community.
Below the canyon the raft trip continues through the eastern Rockies' scenic foothills where guests commonly see wildlife including bald eagles, muskrat, and moose.
