One of the Canadian Rockies' most popular whitewater rafting trips is on the scenic Kicking Horse River, west of Alberta's Banff National Park. Rafting on the Kicking Horse, a tributary of the upper Columbia River, is primarily done on the through the rocky and heavily forested upper canyons. The Class III-IV rapids of the upper river are not for children or timid first-time rafters.
When water levels are just right, outfitters will also offer experienced rafters an exciting adventure on the Class IV+ lower Kicking Horse. The 5 mile (8 km) lower trip is usually preceded by a morning run of the upper Kicking Horse and includes the portage of an unrunnable Class V-VI rapid.
