The Nahatlatch, in
southern British Columbia, offers rafters one the province's most
challenging and exhilarating paddle adventures. Paddle rafters
prepare for the Nahatlatch trip by running the half-mile or so
stretch between Hannah and Frances lakes. Shortly below Frances
Lake, the exciting whitewater action of the Nahatlatch begins. Many
Class III-IV rapids, like Rose Garden, Meatgrinder, and Headwall,
require active rafter participation and leave little time to enjoy
the passing scenery.
The
6-mile (9.5-km) canyon section of the Nahatlatch is the most
intense. Large boulders, giant waves, and a gradient dropping at a
rate of nearly 100 feet per mile create more than a dozen technical
Class III-IV+ rapids. During high water, one Class V rapid may be
portaged.
The
Canyon should only be attempted by experienced rafters in good
physical condition who at least eighteen years old. The best time
for the canyon section is usually during the more moderate water of
July and August.
